On the Threshold of Greatness

Michael Pollan on Oprah

January 26, 2010 · 1 Comment

Hi!  Since I know many of my readers are supporters of Michael Pollan, I thought I’d let you all know that he will be on Oprah tomorrow, January 27.  The caption for this episode reads, “Before You Grocery Shop Again: Food 101 with Michael Pollan.”  Should be a very interesting and informative show!   I wasn’t aware that he had a new book out this month entitled Food Rules:  An Eater’s Manual. I’m definitely going to have to pick a copy up!  Have any of you read it yet?  I’d love to know what you think!

Until next time!

Sunshine on a cold, rainy night

January 22, 2010 · 3 Comments

Happy Thursday!

I’m happy to say that the bodybugg is still on my arm.   :-)    I love this little gadget so far.  It’s incredibly motivating to see the difference between calories consumed and calories burned.  All those little walks around the block at work, and trips up and down the stairs, really do add up!

I was pretty good about sticking to my meal plan today.  Part of getting back in the swing of things for me is keeping it simple!

I still have about half of a large container of blueberries left, so I knew I should include them in my breakfast today.  Before I left this morning, I threw the following into a container to eat when I got to work.

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 scoop chia seeds
  • 1/2 banana
  • lots of cinnamon
  • sprinkle of sea salt
  • blueberries
  • almond butter

By the time I got to work, it was nice and thick from the chia seeds.  Yum!

Lately, I’ve been eating lunch out a little too much.  There are just too many good places to go in DC!  For the sake of my waistline and my checking account, I know I need to cut back on this.  And so, I’ve stashed a few frozen meals in the freezer at work for those days I don’t make my lunch.  No excuses!

Today’s frozen entree of choice – Amy’s Tortilla Casserole & Black Beans The picture on the box is way more attractive than my actual meal was.  Thankfully, I don’t judge my food by looks alone.   This was awesome!   :D   Not that I’m surprised, Amy’s is the best packaged food as far as I’m concerned.

Before I left for my commute home, I snacked on a Raw Organic Food Bar.  These bars are amazing!  I’m always a little sad when I finish the last bite.   ;-)

All day long, I had been thinking about the Sunshine Burger I was going to have for dinner tonight.   I heated the burger in a dry skillet, then served it on Ezekiel toast with cheddar, mixed greenery, and organic ketchup.  For my sides, I had baked sweet potato fries and leftover broccoli from last night.   I buy the Wegmans brand organic ketchup and it is soooo tomatoey.  Can you see how much darker it is than regular ketchup?

I usually finish off my evening with a glass of wine, but sadly I’m all out.   :(    Since I wanted to sip on something while watching my OC girls, I grabbed a Miller Lite left from my last party.

With Layli by my side, it was a pretty good night.     :D

The Good Kind of Deficit

January 20, 2010 · 3 Comments

Good evening bloggers!

For breakfast this morning, I had something I haven’t had in way too long – a protein pancake! I used to eat these on a regular basis, and it was nice to have one back in my life again.   :-)

Today’s pancake contained:

  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup egg whites
  • 1/2 scoop chia seeds
  • 1/2 scoop Jay Robb vanilla whey protein
  • tons of cinnamon
  • sprinkle of sea salt

I blended all of the above ingredients, then poured the “batter” into a nonstick skillet.  Cook just until the edges are set, then flip as you would any normal pancake.

Topped with 1/2 banana, fresh blueberries, and a drizzle of maple syrup, this was the perfect breakfast to fuel me through the morning.   Along with my pancake, I had two cups of gloriously strong coffee with about a tablespoon of International Delights creamer.  I know these creamers are nutritionally worthless, but sometimes I really enjoy having them on hand.   :-)    Such a yummy breakfast!

For lunch, I had brown food on a brown plate.   ;)   The sandwich is toasted Ezekiel bread filled with Sabra hummus, cheddar cheese, and mixed greens.  On the side,  honey wheat pretzels dipped in more hummus, and a low fat pumpkin spice muffin from my mom.

Sometimes the most simple foods are truly the most delicious!

For dinner, I tried my first Quorn cranberry and goat cheese cutlet along with some steamed broccoli that I seasoned with garlic powder, sea salt, and lots of black pepper.

Like all of the other Quorn products I’ve tried, this did not disappoint!  Even though I’m not exactly sure how good quorn is for me (I’ve heard it’s like a man-made fungus?  not sure though), I really love that the products are all soy free and taste delicious!  I figure it’s okay to enjoy in moderation, just like almost all other foods.

With my dinner, I had a glass of merlot in a Duvel glass (which may have ended up in my purse at a bar in Amsterdam. shhhhh…..)     ;-)    I still haven’t moved my wine glasses to the new house.  One day I’ll be motivated to wrap all those delicate stems… One day.

Not wanting to miss anything, Rocky was by my side in the kitchen working on his peanut butter filled bone.  I’m happy he and Layli have adjusted so well to the new place!

I entered all of my food into the bodybugg program today, and at the end of the day, it looks like I’ll have an approx. 500 calorie deficit.   :-)   My ultimate goals is a 750 calorie deficit to lose 1.5 pounds a week, but I’m not going to stress over the numbers too much.  As long as I’m consistently burning more than I’m consuming, I consider it a success.  I didn’t do a formal workout today, just some cleaning and dog walking, so I’m pretty happy with my eats today.   :-)

I’m off to finish watching The Real World DC!  I haven’t watched this show in years but I’m sort of drawn to the DC season since I work near where most of the filming was done.

Hope you have a great night!

Body Buggin’

January 18, 2010 · 3 Comments

Hey everyone!

I hope you had a fabulous weekend!   :-D

I decided that instead of joining Weight Watchers again to get myself back on track, I’d invest in a bodybugg.   I’ve heard nothing but good things about these little contraptions and thought I’d take advantage of the fact that my gym is offering them now.  I have an appointment on Saturday with a personal trainer for a fitness assessment and to discuss my goals.  I’ll then follow up with the trainer again in several weeks to see how much progress I’ve made.

I’ll keep you all posted on how I feel about the bodybugg!   Have you or anyone you’ve known ever used one?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

back in the saddle

Good evening!

We’ve made it through another Monday!

Before I left for Europe last month, I bought a dozen eggs that are now begging to be used before they go bad.  Since I finally have pans in my new house, I cooked myself a pretty awesome breakfast sandwich.   :D    I filled two slices of Ezekiel toast with one egg, two slices of turkey, and a sprinkling of goat cheese.

While sitting at my desk this morning, I sipped on some sizzurp Divine Grape Kombucha. I love this flavor because it reminds me of Dimetapp – my childhood drug of choice!

Lunch was boring and predictable – leftover lasagna.  Still tastes amazing though!

I worked late this evening (big surprise there) so I packed a nice snack that I ate around 5:30 pm.

I layered sliced banana, vanilla oikos, and raspberries in a coffee cup and went to town while staring blindly at spreadsheets.

As soon as I walked in the front door, I noticed Layli had dropped her little ball into her water dish.  I remember Erin saying that her cat does this as well, which made me feel a little bit better since Layli is certainly not the brightest thing.  It cracks me up every time I see it!   :D

I’d like to say that I came home and cooked a wholesome dinner for myself, but that would be a lie!   :-)    Since I worked late, I figured it was a good night to try one of the Chinese carryout places in my new ‘hood.  I have to find a new spot to satisfy my bean curd & vegetables and crab rangoon cravings!

I usually finish my evening with a glass of wine, but I was feeling like beer tonight.  In the background, you can see my tiny little staircase.   :-)

Since this is a blog about my weight loss, I have to admit that I’ve gained a few pounds this winter.  I’m trying to get back into my groove without being to hard on myself.  One thing I learned over the course of my weight loss was that I don’t do well with a lot of restrictions.  I am definitely one of those people who will go completely overboard if I forbid myself from having the things I love.  I’ve been doing some thinking about how I want to approach my new weight loss and fitness goals.  As much as I don’t want to spend money, I’ve been considering joining Weight Watchers again.  I’ve never gone to meetings for more than a few months at a time, but I have jump started my weight loss each of the three times I’ve joined.  And each time, I was able to maintain the weight I lost while on the program.  Since I don’t want to make any financial commitments right now, I’m going to start tracking my points again throughout the day in a plain notebook.  Part of getting back on track is having an honest look at what I’m eating and how much I’m exercising.  Along with the paper journal, I’m going to try to blog as much as my schedule will allow.  I love the support that you all have given me over the past year or so, and I don’t want to give that up! I’m going to get back on track.  Life is full of ups and downs, and as long as I don’t let myself get too out of control, I’m okay with that.   :-)

Getting Settled

January 10, 2010 · 3 Comments

Hey hey!

I know I said I was going to post sooner, but I left my camera cord at my mom’s house and didn’t pick it up until this afternoon.

Want to know what else I picked up this afternoon?  My TV!  I’ve been so busy since closing on my house at the end of November that I still haven’t moved everything from my mom’s place.  I don’t watch a lot of tv, so the little 20 inch guy was serving its purpose, but I’m glad to have my 46 inch baby home!   :-)  Now, my blind ass doesn’t have to squint to read the guide, lol.  My sister’s hubby is going to mount it on the wall for me at some point.  Until then, it’s sittin’ ghetto style on the coffee table.

I’ll try to post some pictures of my house as I get it situated.  It’s a slow process, but I’m getting there.   :D   One thing that I do love is my new couch!  It feels like velvet and is super comfy, without being to casual.

I had to get something that wasn’t going to clash with the Victorian furniture my grandma gave me.  My was built in 1890 and is very small – so different than the newer townhouse I thought I’d get!  The small space means that you can pretty much see the entire downstairs all at once.  You wouldn’t believe how hard it was to find a comfy couch that matched the scale of my grandma’s furniture!

This is my grandmother, by the way.  Isn’t she pretty?   :-D  I have loved her bridal portrait since I was a little girl, so you know I jumped on that shit when she moved out of her house!   (that spot in the upper right corner is not on my wall… I need to take my camera somewhere and have the lens cleaned)

Thankfully, I had leftovers to heat up for dinner tonight after going to my mom’s house and running some earrands.  I made lasagna yesterday for my boy toy and me to have for lunch.  I made it slightly healthier by using bison from the farmer’s market instead of beef, whole wheat lasagna noodles, and part-skim cheeses.  I also added in a few handfuls of baby spinach.   Not to toot my own horn or anything, but this was some pretty spectacular lasagna.   ;-)   Since nothing goes better with carbs than more carbs, I had a slice of Ezekiel bread with a little butter to dip in the sauce.

To drink, I’ve been sipping on this same glass of Pinot Noir all night.  I love this little juice glass my friend got me from anthropologie!  She hooked me up with the housewarming gifts!   :D

I believe this may have been the most random post ever!  Thanks for hanging in there with me.   :-)

Until next time bloggers!

Holding onto the holidays with breakfast

January 3, 2010 · 6 Comments

Happy New Year!       :D

It’s been too long!

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful holiday season!   Mine was great.   :-)

NYE was the usual dinner out followed by bar hopping, including drinking my weight in vodka.   ;-)   I kid.  Melissa is the one who drank her weight in Grey Goose that night!

Christmas was pretty low key since I had a few sick family members, my brother didn’t come up from Atlanta, and I had just returned from a week in Europe.   I did, however, have the honor of being my niece’s tea juice party companion.  She wore the headband that came with the ballerina costume I bought her, and she gave me the hat I got her at H&M.   Aren’t we cute?   ;-)

As much as I hated saying goodbye to the holidays, it always feels nice to get back to normal again, whatever that might mean.  My mom went out of town for the weekend, so I’m taking care of the cat while she’s away.  I came over this morning and searched the kitchen for some breakfast.

I grabbed a few delicious honey mustard pretzels while I considered my options.

My mom mentioned having some leftover pumpkin pancakes from yesterday morning, so I rolled with those.  Archer Farms can do no wrong.  This mix is truly awesome!

I had all four leftover pancakes with some Olivio butter spray and maple syrup.

I also had a cup of coffee topped with whipped cream leftover from the holidays.  All of this was served on one of my mom’s holiday plates, and my nephew’s snowman placemat.

:D    I’m sure he won’t mind sharing.

It’s super cold in my mom’s house, so I’m about to cozy up under the blankets and catch up on some long overdue blog reading.

I’ll leave you with some of the pictures from my recent Amsterdam/Germany trip.  A friend of mine was generous enough to bring me and another friend with her to Germany as her dates to a wedding since her husband couldn’t go.  How often do you get to go to a wedding in a castle?!  It was such a great experience!  And, of course, there was lots of good food included.   :-)

(excuse the funky spacing, not sure what the deal is with that)

I’ll be back later this evening!  Promise!

Still kickin’

November 7, 2009 · 10 Comments

Hello loves!

I want to thank all of you who have reached out to me over the passed few weeks.  You sure know how to make a girl feel loved.   :D    I’ve been completely distracted from the blog lately as I’ve changed jobs and continued the hamster wheel run that is buying a house.  Things are finally starting to settle down, so hopefully I’ll be back in the swing of things soon!

I’m about to drive out to my sister’s house to watch my niece and nephew for our first overnight visit.  God help us all.  Wish me luck with the one year old who is still attached to my sister’s hip.     :-|

IMG_3808

Remember, Aliyah, you do love me!    If I manage to not put the diaper on backwards, I’m already one step ahead from when I watched my nephew at that age.   ;)

Be back soon!

Miss you!   <3

Pure Heaven in a Box

September 26, 2009 · 16 Comments

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all your well wishes!  I am feeling 100% better.     :D

I’m about to head out of town for the weekend because my grandparents are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary tomorrow by renewing their vows at church.  How adorable is that?   Since my best friend lives out toward my grandparents, I’m going to spend the night there this evening.   Should be a fun weekend!

I wanted to share an amazing food delivery service called Pure Market Express with you.   I had seen positive reviews of Pure Market Express on Choosing Raw and Kristen’s Raw, and after seeing how affordable the foods were, I decided to place an order.  Having pneumonia put me in a bit of a lazy funk and the thought of having heathy, fresh, prepared foods on hand was very appealing to me.

My food arrived via Fed Ex two days after placing my order.  Pure Market Express does one day shipping, but I went with the more affordable option.  Everything was packed beautifully and it all arrived still cold with the ice packets.

Maestro enjoyed playing in the boxes.     :D

IMG_4665

I’ve tried a few of the meals so far and have been very impressed!    I’ll post a more complete review of the food when I finish eating all of it.   Until then, I’ll show you what has been my favorite item so far – Cocogurt.

From the Pure Market Express website:

Our raw variation of plain yogurt is beautiful with fresh fruit or served as an alternative to sour cream.

Ingredients: cashews, raw coconut meat, coconut water, lemon juice

IMG_4688

After my gym session this morning, I enjoyed a serving of cocogurt topped with a sliced banana and cinnamon apple granola.

Look how creamy this stuff is!   Even my mother, who is generally not a fan of vegan substitutes, couldn’t believe how closely this resembled real yogurt.    I have had coconut yogurt before and wasn’t really impressed by it.  I’m glad that didn’t stop me from trying Pure Market’s version because it is AMAZING!   I will absolutely be ordering this again!

I’ll be back soon with more reviews!

Have a great weekend!     :-)

I have pneumonia.

September 18, 2009 · 14 Comments

Hi!

As you can see from this post’s title, I’ve been sick with pneumonia for nearly a week now.   It’s the craziest thing.  I haven’t had a cold or anything recently, and I generally have a very strong immune system.  It all started last Friday at work when I could not sit comfortably at all!  My upper right back was super sore and I just didn’t feel right.  I even went online to see if any local spas had late massage appointments available.   They didn’t, so I just went home and had a pity party for one.   Saturday morning, the pain had shifted from my back to the right side of my chest.  Every time I inhaled, I felt like I was going to bust my right lung.  Not a good thing.  I decided it would probably be best to go to the urgent care place to see if I was going to live or not.   As I was getting ready to leave, I nearly passed out in the shower.  I started getting dizzy and seeing black dots, so I hauled ass out of there before I had the chance to bite it in the hard bath tub.  Something was already obviously wrong with my lung, I didn’t need a head injury on top of that!  Long story short, the urgent care doc sent me to the hospital for chest x-rays but didn’t seem to think I had anything more than muscular soreness.  He told me to take it easy and come back on Sunday if I didn’t feel any better.  Don’t we all love that response from doctors?

I had plans to go visit my friend Melissa out in the country on Saturday with my other friend Kelly.  Since we left much later than planned, we just stayed in and played Monopoly instead going anywhere.  We are such old farts.  Melissa and Kelly drank cocktails made with vodka…

IMG_4581

and I stuck to red wine because I wasn’t really feeling the hard liquor.  My glass was labeled “gimp” because of my sickness.  My lung was still hurting and my breathing was becoming more and more labored.  Good times!

IMG_4582

As usual, the greatest source of entertainment at Melissa’s house was her two little girls.  Here’s Tatum singing in her voice changing helmet.  Hilarious!

IMG_4580

When I woke up on Sunday morning, I could barely move without extreme pain in my chest.   :-(    I attempted walking to the bathroom when I first got up, and I had to take a break and sit on the couch for a few minutes.   How pathetic is that?   Since I was obviously not any better, I went back to the urgent care place and paid yet another $20 copay to be told I seemed okay, but to go to the ER if my pain got worse or my breathing became more labored.  Thanks doc!

Since I was feeling like crap, I baked myself an awesome cheese and spinach lasagna.

IMG_4591

IMG_4593

Late Sunday night, I told my mom that I wanted to go to the ER.  ”Wanted” may not be the best word because who wants to go to the ER?  I knew something was wrong with me and I wanted to find out exactly what it was before I was supposed to work on Monday morning.   Thankfully, I was seen pretty quickly in the ER.  Probably didn’t hurt that I put “chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness” as my symptoms.   ;)    After an EKG, 6 vials of blood, and a CT scan, it was determined that I didn’t have a blood clot (yay!), but I did have pneumonia.  They sent me home with prescriptions for antibiotics and percocet, along with a huge nasty bruise on my right arm.  I followed up with my regular doctor on Wednesday and she told me I was out of work until at least Monday.  So, I’ve been spending the past week sleeping, playing Mafia Wars on Facebook, and eating.  Most of my time has been spent sleeping.  I don’t take prescription pain pills often, but when I do, I love the way they make me drift in and out of sleep all day!  I can totally see how people get addicted.

So, what have I been eating?   Lots and lots of oatmeal.  I always make oatmeal on the stove with water, cinnamon, vanilla, and banana.

I’ve had a bowl with tons of fresh berries and raw almond butter.

IMG_4596

And a less exciting bowl with fewer berries and natural peanut butter.  Sadly, I have no more berries or raw almond butter.   :(

IMG_4599

I finally tried eating my oatmeal out of the empty almond butter jar.  I’m not sure which blogger did this first, otherwise I’d give them credit!

IMG_4609

I think this idea is awesome, but mine would have been better if I left more almond butter in the jar.   :D      As you can see, I’ve been drinking a lot of orange juice lately too.  I rarely drink OJ, but love it when I’m sick!

IMG_4610

Since I’ve had nothing but time on my hands, I channeled my inner Erin and made some fake ice cream.  In the blender went a frozen banana, frozen young coconut meat, a few frozen strawberries, lots of frozen blueberries, cinnamon, and agave.

IMG_4600

And topped with a sprinkling of bee pollen.   Yum!   I loved this.

IMG_4601

IMG_4602

I’ve also been eating a lot of fresh pineapple.  For once, I stopped being lazy and spending $5 on the pre-cut stuff, and bought two to cut up myself.

IMG_4614

After my doctor appointment on Wednesday, I went to Global Food for another one of my sick food staples – chicken pho.

IMG_4603

I’m not a big fan of spicy, but actually used a decent amount of hot sauce this time around.  I was thinking the spiciness might help the healing process.

IMG_4607

Now that you’ve seen my favorite meals over the past few days, I’ll show you what I’ve had so far today.

My mom brought home donut holes from her office last night, so I had two of them along with some coffee first thing this morning.

IMG_4616

Then I had yet another bowl of banana oatmeal!  We are pretty low on groceries right now, so I just had a big spoonful of almond butter in my oats.  This is the Whole Foods brand of roasted almond butter, and I while it’s good, I prefer raw almond butter so much more!   I miss the gritty, natural taste of the raw stuff.  Along with my oatmeal, I had a big glass of OJ and my antibiotic.

IMG_4617

I’m about to go shower and maybe head out to rent a few movies and buy some groceries.  Poor Rocky is even low on food!

I hope this post made some kind of sense!  My last percocet may not have worn off yet.   ;-)    The biggest thing I want you all to remember is LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!  Two different doctors told me I was fine, even after listening to my lungs and reading my chest xray, which they even said wasn’t very good because I couldn’t take a deep enough breath.  I knew something was wrong and kept going back until someone could tell me what it was.  Had I listened to the first doctor, my pneumonia would have gone untreated for who knows how long, and I could have ended up very sick.   Sometimes you may know more than the doctors. They can only see so much through the tests they run, but YOU know when something isn’t right in your own body.    These are the times I am SO grateful to have health insurance.

See ya’ll later!
